My long term goal for my rifle is to rebarrell it and bring it up to Scout standards, until then, it serves it purpose. Put a 1-4 power scout scope with illuminated retical and I think you have just about the best balanced 7.62 NATO rifle you can get. The Scout offers a more rounded rifle that is only a few inches longer that the Socom but still has good longer range accuracy. The M1A is a heavy rifle from the start, fires a very powerful cartridge, and would not be my 1st choice for CQB, so I really don't see what advantage I get out of the shorter barrel. The Scout offers better accuracy and a standard gas system than the Socom does. I really wish I would have gone the route of an M1A Scout. I only have around 500 rounds through it, so I really can't comment on long term service life, but it seems very well built and hasn't given me any problems so far. The M14 rifle, officially the United States Rifle, Caliber 7.62 mm, M14, is an American selective-fire battle rifle chambered for the 7.62×51mm NATO (.308. It is loud, but I really don't think it is any louder that any other short barreled 7.62Nato with a brake (FAL, ect). Mine is equipped with an Aimpoint M2 which is a big improvement over the iron sights - which I regard as backup sights. The front sight does not lend to pin point accuracy, but was not envisioned for that purpose (more on that later). It has been very reliable with its only malfunctions being due to a bad magazine (wouldn't work in my NM either).

It accuracy for 5 shot groups has ranged from 2MOA up to 5MOA depending on ammo. I went with it primarily for the fact that it was Kalifornia OK as well as it had a common manual of arms with and took the same magazines as my National Match M1A.
